1D Response and Self-Portrait Pitch
Response to 1D:
I didn’t learn as much about sound design with 1D as I did with
1B, but I did learn about putting images to a soundscape. It was fun to try to
find the photos that fit the tone of the soundscape, or to manipulate them in a
way that made them fit. Sometimes, I found it difficult to establish an
effective rhythm with the images that didn’t follow the exact rhythm of the
soundscape but synced up with it well. It was a challenge not being able to
alter the soundscape in any way, but it forced us to be more creative with the
way we arranged and edited the images.
Self-portrait idea:
For my self-portrait, I want to use editing and camera techniques
to show contrast between my “outer self,” or what everyone sees when they look
at me (my surface level identity), and my “inner self,” or what I feel is the
deeper, more complex part of my identity. I’m playing with the idea of using imagery
of a closed-up flower being pulled open interspersed throughout my film to
emphasize the idea of “revealing.” Technically, I want to focus on fluid camera
and body movements and fluid motions through a variety of physical spaces,
similar to the spatial discontinuity in many of Maya Deren’s films. I also want
to use different shot scales to emphasize the difference between my “outer self”
and “inner self” by shooting my “outer self” generally in long shots (the
viewer is distanced from me) and my “inner self” in close-ups (the viewer is
given a closer, more detailed look at who I am on the inside). I’m still
contemplating what I want to do for my film’s sound, but I think I want to make
a minimalist soundscape that incorporates some mellow clarinet sounds (not a piece of
music, but just random sounds or notes) that I will record myself playing.
